These tintypes are made by S.Gayle Stevens. Her work is quite lovely, I like the small size that she works at (images above are around 5x5inches each) and her use of these small photographs to work together to create something larger, as seen below. The images above are from the series 'Calligraphy' where Stevens has drawn representations of natural objects collected over time and then exposed them on the the tin. The drawing are amazing, and I would not have know that they were drawings unless I was stated!

These photographs are Ambrotypes (wet plate negative, backed with a black material or paint to create a positive).
With wet plate there seems to be thousands of images of still lives and portraits but a limited number of landscapes (or good ones anyways), which is why I have put these images up. I quite like the vastness of the landscapes and the cloud in the top image. 
Iam not too interested in the content of the last three sets of images, but am blown away by the hand colouring that the artist has done. It really is wonderful, and detailed-Id love to see them in real life!

Selected Wet Plates #1

Here are some random tintypes Ive come across on the net, but haven't been able to find much about the artists or more of their work.
Top two are by a guy names Carlos Arrieta. From what I can gather these are photographs taken on an iphone, turned into a negative and exposed onto a tintype. If it is true then I like the use of modern and historic photography! iphones probably have an app that can create tintype looking images, but i hope these really are tintypes.

The last image is by Barbara Dombach. She has s website, but this image came from another site and i couldnt find anything like it on her personal site. I like the use of four square tintypes to create a whole. Iam not sure of the size, but I imagine them to be quite small and intimate (could be completely wrong here).

I guess I am just interested in how others are using wetplate to represent elements of nature, leaves, weeds etc.

These tin types are from a series by Jessica Somers called 100 days photographs. We all know the pledge people make to take a photograph every day for a year or for the rest of their life, and then they make a blog about it and it is boring as bat shit. Well Somers did take that pledge in 2009, but the interesting thing is, she decided to do it using the tintype process. That got my attention!
All the photographs are self portraits that are representative of a creative process Somers was doing at the time (i think, there isn't too much info about it).
100 photographs is alot, and taking a tintype everyday is quite an ask as well, as some days they just dont work! ( see August 22nd above) but can also give you the most amazing results. These are some from the collection that took my eye. Iam really interested in the different colours produced in the different images and wonder if that is just the magic of the process, or if there was a toner or special step used to create the blues and greens and browns. Iam so drawn to blue and cream at the moment and want to turn everything that colour.
